The jasse of Fontbonne, a vernacular rural structure in the Cévennes, reflects the transformation of mountain architecture following the decline of agricultural practices. Originally used for chestnut cultivation and drying produce, it later served as a hikers’ shelter until the collapse of its roof in 2004. The intervention by COMBAS Architects reactivates the building through a careful balance of conservation and contemporary design. The project preserves the original spatial configuration while introducing a lightweight internal structure independent from the existing stone walls, ensuring durability and proper drainage. Compressed cork panels provide insulation and visually echo the masonry texture. New openings, defined by deep wooden frames, mediate between tradition and modernity, with an elongated window enhancing light and landscape perception. The intervention demonstrates how conservation principles can be adapted to modest vernacular contexts, restoring both function and cultural relevance.
