This study shows that chronic bronchitis is common among young adult smokers with preserved lung function, but its identification strongly depends on the questionnaire used. Nearly half of participants reported bronchitis by at least one definition, yet agreement between questionnaires was limited, with many individuals identified by only a single tool and full agreement occurring in a minority of cases. These findings suggest that different questionnaires capture distinct subgroups of smokers, and understanding which of these best predict COPD development may help target early preventive interventions.

Baraldi, Federico;
2025

Abstract

This study shows that chronic bronchitis is common among young adult smokers with preserved lung function, but its identification strongly depends on the questionnaire used. Nearly half of participants reported bronchitis by at least one definition, yet agreement between questionnaires was limited, with many individuals identified by only a single tool and full agreement occurring in a minority of cases. These findings suggest that different questionnaires capture distinct subgroups of smokers, and understanding which of these best predict COPD development may help target early preventive interventions.
