The volume brings together over one hundred selected papers based on the presentations delivered at the 11th AISU International Congress – Italian Association of Urban History (Ferrara, 13–16 September 2023), focused on knowledge and practices - including those of memory - related to a diachronic vision of the city. Cities are layered and open structures, the result of processes that, in their unfolding, produce organisms made up of diverse parts and characterized by a multiplicity of images. Such an interpretation requires interdisciplinary approaches to foster synergies among different perspectives, as well as investigations on multiple scales - from the urban whole to detailed elements. The goal is to uncover and narrate, through the analysis of aspects and components of the urban landscape, stories of objects, phenomena, and people, thus unfolding perspectives of knowledge and memory for the future. The volume is structured into three parts: "Knowledge of the Layered City: Synchronic and Diachronic Readings"; "Practices on the Layered City, Between Conservation and Transformation"; "Memories about the Layered City. Phenomena and Noumena From the Past".
