Eladio Dieste's Inventive Design and Build - The Discontinuous Gaussian Vaults

Eladio Dieste addressed the transformation of an architectural poetics through the path of a clear, precise, and simple building technique. The idea that technical clarity, precision, and simplicity would lead almost naturally to artistic production also underlies the work of men such as Nervi, Fuller, and Candela. It constitutes an answer, in a sense symmetrical and, in a sense, opposite, to the attitude of the men of the rationalist decade, who discovered the importance of being good builders when they were already good architects. The chapter aims to explain the methodological procedures and results of the Ph.D. thesis “Parametric Modelling of Dieste’s Gaussian Vaults, developed within a double degree from Mackenzie Presbyterian University and Università degli Studi di Ferrara.
