This work offers the critical edition of the two redactions of the first Alonso Jerónimo de Salas Barbadillo’s novel: La hija de Celestina (Zaragoza and Lérida, 1612) and La ingeniosa Elena (Madrid, 1614). The research is part of the MICINN’s research project “Estudio y edición de las Obras completas de Alonso Jerónimo de Salas Barbadillo y Alonso de Castillo Solórzano” (PID2021-123533NB-I00), directed by Professor Rafael Bonilla Cerezo (Universidad de Córdoba), which aims to address the critical gaps that still affect the considerable corpus of both authors. The research team, that includes several international renowned scholars, intends to provide new editions and comments of the texts of Salas Barbadillo and Castillo Solórzano (many of them still unpublished). This edition includes an introductory study articulated in nine chapters, focusing on the reconstruction of the status quaestionis regarding both the author and the piece, and on its paratexts, structure, genre, language and style, errors and redactional variants. Furthermore, we have included critical editions of La hija de Celestina and La ingeniosa Elena, extensively annotated and established through the application of Lachmann’s method. We have collated the largest number of preserved testimonies of both novels (ten of Z, two of L, and six of M) along with a copy of two re-editions: the Milanese edition of La hija de Celestina (Mi), descriptus of L, and the eighteenth-century edition of La ingeniosa Elena by Pedro José Alonso y Padilla (Pad), descriptus of M. The analysis of the common errors has shed light on the relationships among the different witnesses of La hija de Celestina and La ingeniosa Elena. Moreover, we have studied the equally acceptable variants, with the aim of establishing their authorship and of reconstructing the author’s revision strategy. For this purpose, each critical text is followed by two apparatuses: a critical one, which gathers the errors of the tradition, and another for the redactional variants.
