This study focuses on everyday fashion and sustainability in a cultural perspective. The project is articulated around three main objectives. First, it aims to broaden the discourse on sustainable fashion by a contextualisation of sustainability and fashion as an everyday cultural phenomenon. The second objective of the study is to frame the use and the design of garments exploring links to the notion of transition, and formulating further questions aiming to facilitate the application of sustainable design methodologies, such as emotional design or transition design. The third objective consist in analysing transitions in a cultural perspective in a marginal context, specifically in Eastern Europe, contributing to the cultural understanding of fashion and sustainability. The study employed a mixed-methodology approach. In particular, the first part of the study was conducted through theoretical research through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary lens, focusing on analysing relevant literature and building theoretical connections to ground and explore the phenomenon of fashion and sustainability as everyday practices. The second part of the study combined ethnographic research with object-based research related to fashion, namely, wardrobe research. A qualitative field study was carried out, focusing on the wardrobes of elderly people in rural areas of Hungary. The analysis followed the framework of cultural analysis for sustainability, presenting innovative methodological processes. This study suggests that framing fashion in a cultural perspective offers an occasion to consider it as a supportive cultural element within transitions towards sustainability instead of a subject of it. Moreover, the project offers critical perspectives on cultural interventions by examining through field research a geographical area that experienced ideological shifts. This research is significant in framing the ambiguous and ever-changing phenomenon of fashion embracing its fluidity, versatility, and ambiguity, considering these aspects a valuable space of meaning.
