This PhD research explores the evolving role of natural history museums as agents of sustainability and wellbeing, highlighting their capacity to promote environmental awareness and influence sustainable behaviour through their collections and educational practices. Drawing on an extensive literature review, educational projects developed and tested at the University of Ferrara's ‘Piero Leonardi’ Museum of Palaeontology and Prehistory, field research activities in Asia, and active participation in ICOM (International Council of Museums) working groups, the study highlights the growing recognition of museums as transformative spaces. Over the last two decades, these institutions have transformed from passive custodians of heritage into dynamic places that foster critical reflection, social connections and collective growth. A central contribution of the research is the development of the SEEE model, which integrates scientific knowledge, emotional engagement and self-efficacy to create educational pathways that stimulate critical thinking and inspire sustainable behaviour. This innovative approach provides a replicable framework for translating scientific knowledge into transformative educational experiences, stimulating in visitors not only an understanding of environmental phenomena, but also confidence in their own ability to adopt sustainable practices. The research period in Asia fills significant gaps in the museological literature, bringing attention to the under-explored practices of Asian museums in communicating sustainability. The results showed that Asian nature museums distinguish themselves in creating engaging and empowering narratives. In fact, the case studies analysed show how Asian museological practices, rooted in their culture's own aspect of the interdependence between humans and nature, highlight practices that offer valuable insights for Western museums, demonstrating how the integration of cultural tradition and scientific communication can expand the educational and social reach of museum institutions. The comparative analysis conducted between the Asian and Italian realities examined reveals differences as well as common challenges, highlighting the potential of intercultural exchanges to more effectively address global challenges, strengthening their role as catalysts for environmental and social transformation. In conclusion, this study reaffirms the transformative potential of museums in shaping a more sustainable and inclusive society. On the basis of this study and its findings, future research should further explore international collaborations and the long-term impacts of educational activities conducted, further promoting the integration of sustainability and wellbeing as core principles of contemporary museology. International exchanges, particularly between Italy and Asia, offer a promising prospect for developing innovative museological practices capable of responding to the global challenges of our time. Through emotional, empathic, interdisciplinary and inclusive approaches, museums can play a central role in building a socially aware and ecologically responsible global community.
