Right hemicolectomy refers to the resection of a portion of the distal ileum, cecum, ascending colon, and proximal to mid-transverse colon followed by ileocolic anastomosis. Malignant, premalignant, and benign diseases are indications for a right hemicolectomy and include a right colon cancer (e.g., cecum, ascending colon), appendiceal cancer, large adenomas, right-sided diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease, ischemia/infarction, infection, trauma, and cecal volvulus. Extended right hemicolectomy refers to extension of the distal resection margin to include the distal transverse colon up to the splenic flexure. The indications for an extended right hemicolectomy include a cancer located between the hepatic flexure and mid-transverse colon, synchronous ascending and transverse colon cancers, and multiple adenomas, which may or may not be part of a genetic syndrome or it is not possible to remove during endoscopic procedure (Andrea C. Bafford. Right and extended right colectomy: Open technique. In: Uptodate. 2021st ed).

Abstract

2021st ed).
