The aim of this article is to investigate the intended audience of the Middle English renderings of Lanfranc’s surgical treatises in order to ascertain whether they were first made and then copied for concrete use by surgeons and empiric practitioners, or were intended for a different target audience, i.e., recipients who just enjoyed reading about surgery without actually practicing it.
