The morphology of this part of the province of Ferrara can be traced back directly to the origin of the territory itself, that is, to its nature as a land reclamation area. The history of reclamation is perhaps the most particular of the stories of the transformation of the natural environment into a human landscape and of the relationships that caused the transformation. Starting from the 6th century BC the Etruscans went to northern Italy in the direction of the Adriatic Sea, establishing their control area in the Po delta, a traditional landing and exchange area for Mediterranean navigation, in particular the Greek one. Here they founded the city of Spina - positioned at the con uence of strategic river and land communication routes (Reno, Po, Adriatic) - which had long and lasting commercial relations with Athens and the Greek world.
