The essay analyses how Greco-Roman mnemonic techniques were recovered in the Middle Ages by Scholastic philosophy, and how, starting with the writings of Hugh of St. Victor, the combined use of loci and imagines agentes formed the basis of medieval cartography, as for example in the maps contained in the Commentaries on the Apocalypse of the Beatus of Liébana or in the world maps of Hereford and Ebstorf.
