Zelle offers a concise analysis of Schiller’s late essay On the Sublime (1801). He discusses the controversial history of its origin, takes into account its publication context and gives an outlook on the history of reception around 1800 and today. Special emphasis of the analysis is on the structure and the imagery of the text, especially the parable of the two genii and the Telemachus episode. Zelle emphasizes that only the sublime completes aesthetic education, which had previously only been discussed under the aspect of beauty in the Aesthetic Letters (1795). Like all of Zelle’s analyzes of Schiller’s essays, this one is also accompanied by a disposition scheme.
