This paper describes the SMART project, its objectives, its contribution to specific innovation areas, the methodological approach adopted as well as presenting the preliminary results of an exploratory survey administered to a convenience sample of Irish firms in the attempt to assess the state-of-the-art of the use of RFID technology amongst retailers. Our findings illustrate an interesting paradox - although retailers indicate that working collaboratively with supply chain partners is an important strategic area and they understand the relevance of use-cases to company strategy to improve collaboration across their supply chain, they are not very familiar with RFID technology and its applications.
