Architectural restoration is the translation of some conservative principles into practice. These principles are shared and recognized as fundamental; they began to take shape since the mid-eighteenth century, and then they were consolidated into “scientific restoration” from mid-twentieth century and today they still constitute the theoretical support in restoration activity on ancient architecture. The paper traces for these main principles - distinctness, reversibility, respect of authenticity, minimum intervention, chemical-physical compatibility - the history of the concept since early thoughts and applications that have defined the origin of each of those until the current wording, also considering the different aspects expressed into main contemporary schools of thought in Restoration.

Abstract
Architectural restoration is the translation of some conservative principles into practice. These principles are shared and recognized as fundamental; they began to take shape since the mid-eighteenth century, and then they were consolidated into “scientific restoration” from mid-twentieth century and today they still constitute the theoretical support in restoration activity on ancient architecture. The paper traces for these main principles - distinctness, reversibility, respect of authenticity, minimum intervention, chemical-physical compatibility - the history of the concept since early thoughts and applications that have defined the origin of each of those until the current wording, also considering the different aspects expressed into main contemporary schools of thought in Restoration.I documenti in SFERA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
