Abstract
Wittgenstein's argument against private language, together with his conception of understanding as the ability to follow linguistic rules - the rules of language games –make him appear as a philosopher who definitely underestimated the role that sensations and other psychological entities play in understanding. The paper aims at showing that such appearance is mistaken, and that the PLA is not an argument against the legitimacy of psychological language. For Wittgenstein, sensations and other psychological entities become relevant when (e.g.) we face the task of clarifying the difference between understanding the word 'fear' without ever having experienced fear, and understanding it having experienced fear. In such cases, psychological entities are criterial in the description of "what one can do".File | Dimensione | Formato | |
