Facing the study of identity processes and its transformations in the contemporary world means necessarily reflecting on the new forms of thinking about cultural diversity. Referring to the contexts where local and global aspects are linked in a meaningful way and create interesting experiments of daily living, which role does art play in creating new dialogues and stimulating new representations? In the indigenous communities of San Juan Chamula and Tenejapa, in the Mexican state of Chiapas, the use of the camera is not particularly appreciated. Photography is experienced as an external aggression to the rules of tradition which affects the entire community and it combines with forms of tourist promotion that modify the everyday life and the rhythms of the pueblos. However, nowadays indigenous photography renews itself and continues to be influenced by new and interesting creations, as we can see for instance in the work of chiapanecos artists like Antonia Girón Intzín, Abraham Gómez, Juana López López and Marco Girón. In their images, photography becomes a way to live tradition, to conserve memory or to rethink it from an internal perspective. In this way Creativity becomes part of the process of identity definition, reconsidering new ways of being and spaces for social action.

Enfrentarse a los procesos de redefinición de identidad y a sus trasformaciones en la contemporaneidad, significa necesariamente reflexionar sobre nuevas formas de pensar la diversidad cultural. Esto especialmente en contextos en los que aspectos locales y globales se entrelazan de manera significativa y crean interesantes experimentos en el vivir cotidiano. ¿Cómo puede estimular el arte un nuevo diálogo, crear nuevas formas de representación? En las comunidades indígenas de San Juan Chamula y Tenejapa, en el estado mexicano de Chiapas, el uso de la cámara fotográfica no es tan apreciado. La imagen fotográfica, experimentada como una agresión externa a las normas de la tradición y que recae sobre toda la colectividad, se combina con formas de promoción turística que modifican la vida y los ritmos cotidianos de los pueblos. Sin embargo, la fotografía indígena se encuentra hoy en renovación y sigue siendo influenciada por nuevas e interesantes creaciones. Como es el caso de las fotografías de los artistas chiapanecos Antonia Girón Intzín, Abraham Gómez, Juana López López y Marco Girón: en sus obras la fotografía se convierte en modalidad para vivir la tradición, para mantener memoria o para repensarla desde el interior. La creatividad toma parte de los procesos de definición de identidad, reconsidera el propio ser y los espacios de acción social.
