The introduction of the fortification system of the border line, wich passed along the east coast of the Black Sea and reached the Caucasus, made the centers that connected the eastern provinces of the Roman Empire more safe; moreover, this allowed Rome to consolidate its geopolitical interests in the territories of Asia Minor placed more to the east and in the Caucasus. The centers that were part of this system of defense of the borders between the Pontus and the Caucasus, such as Apsaros, Phasis, Sebastopolis (the ancient Dioscurias) and Pityus, were militarily fortified border towns.
