In a context characterized by the exigency to limit soil consumption and car-dependent suburban increase the doctoral thesis puts an ambitious goal to give a method of analisys of the current situation and a technical design model which enable the convergence of objectives planners and private interests. The first chapter aims to qualify social, economic and environmental problems related to the settlement model which has transformed the urban fabric since the second world war to today. Secondly the thesis defines an interpretative method of analisys of urbanized relating it to an emergency situation which allows to identify the areas most at risk on the basis of petroleum dependence. The thesis defines later a sustainable development model: the compact city. Its characteristics allows to define a design approach for the suburban settlements redevelopment and new ones. By using the parameters of urban form values are defined and reference types which are able to conduce urban planning to human-size design focusing on cycling and pedestrian mobility. Finally by using experimental urban redevelopment projects -defined through the application of these methodologies- the thesis tries to create a series of types of intervention in areas whose features are common to most Italian capitals.
