The contribution is related to the first attempts to develop and apply mathematical tools and statistical data to social sciences. One of their major applications was the field of insurance, and this presentation focuses on public insurance, whose first examples are to be found in German states, in Denmark and in the Netherlands. Euler and Lagrange were both involved in similar insurance problems concerning life annuities, and in particular the projects of widow's pension funds of the principality of Calenberg and the Kingdom of Prussia (1767- 1776).
