Recognition of testimonial value is an integral part of a sustainable building process aimed at the preservation and enhancement of all the previous expressions of the building. Green Building Council Italia is moving within this cultural context with the main goal, developed through an interdisciplinary working group, of the establishment of a voluntary certification protocol aimed at evaluating the sustainability level of intervention actions in conservation, refurbishment and integration in pre-industrial buildings. The protocol lays its foundations on the transposition of the concept of sustainability to the conservative world (the restoration intervention is sustainable if it allows future generations to recognize the same cultural values that we recognize today). In particular, credits pertaining to the topic “Historic Value”, through the identification of specific research methodologies and specific operational principles, seek to ensure that everything is recognized as “evidence having the force of civilization” is preserved for future generations. In terms of environmental benefits a less size of the intervention allows a long-term decrease in use of energy and raw materials and a reduction of the impact of construction site on the surrounding environment. From the economic point of view it means a long-term decrease in costs of intervention but also the optimization of the available economic resources and the programming of any eventual funding request. Finally, in terms of social and cultural benefits it allows to maximize the preservation of everything is recognized as “evidence having the force of civilization” and along with it the knowledge of the historical building.

Abstract

The inclusion of a credit that aims to enhance the processing of the Scheduled Maintenance Plan and the scheduling of checks and preventive actions is to be interpreted taking into account the concept of a Triple Bottom Line.
