Increasing evidence suggest that migrants in EU suffer from disparities in health and access to healthcare in comparison to the native population. Addressing factors underlying these disparities is fundamental for a moral, political and public health perspective. Among these factors, the social determinants of health and the barriers migrants’ face in accessing healthcare seem to play a major role in generating inequalities in health. Racial/ethnic discrimination in healthcare, in particular, is a major health determinant as it can influence the quality of care provided to migrants, their physical and mental health and their attitudes toward health and healthcare. EU health systems must therefore pay particular attention to discrimination in healthcare and introduce policies aiming at reaching equitable access to healthcare by migrants.
