In the present work the removal of several organic compounds (which differ in chemical properties and molecular dimensions) from water by using various organophilic zeolite (BEA, Y and ZSM-5) was investigated. Many of the selected compounds are contained in domestic and commercial wastewaters and they are usually found in the surface waters receiving the effluents of the treatment plants since they are not effectively removed by these plants. This study has a dual purpose: i) to measure the sorption capacity of hydrophobic commercial zeolites weighed against organic compounds dissolved in water and to quantify aspects of their removal efficiency for potential use in wastewater and groundwater remediation, and ii) to understand the zeolite structure features for adsorption of these contaminants in aqueous solutions. In particular, in this contribution, the results obtained by a combined chromatographic and diffractometric study will be discussed in order to: 1) investigate the adsorptive properties of these hydrophobic synthetic zeolites; 2) probe the interactions between organic molecules and framework oxygen atoms and 3) compare the adsorption data for a mixture of these contaminants with concentrations in the ppb and ppm range.
