The elastic and elasto-optic properties of thin (70 nm) tetrahedral amorphous carbon (ta-C) films have been studied for the first time by Brillouin scattering of light off surface acoustic phonons (SBS) both in the discrete and in the continuous part of the spectrum. For films of such thickness SBS is the only technique able to measure the elastic constants.
