Abstract
A free electron laser comprises an acceleration chamber containing a photocathode which upon irradiation with light from a laser source emits electrons which pass out of the acceleration chamber through the outlet into the laser chamber. The photocathode is mounted on an elongated carrier which allows the photocathode to be withdrawn into preparation chamber. To regenerate the photocathode it is withdrawn into the preparation chamber which is placed under high vacuum to allow deposition of the K-Te photoemission layer.
