Three organophilic zeolites (FAU, Mordenite and ZSM-5) have been tested for removal of sulfamethoxazole antibiotic from aqueous solution. The interactions of antibiotic with the zeolites were investigated using batch sorption experiments, structural and infrared spectroscopic techniques. Sulfamethoxazole was quikly and completely adsorbed on FAU and Mordenite (< 1 min) while on ZSM-5, the adsorption was completed after 2 weeks. The maximal adsorption capacity of zeolites increased in order: Mordenite < ZSM-5 < FAU. The adsorption was completely irreversible in water. The entrapment of sulfamethoxazole inside zeolites was evaluated by infrared and structural analyses. In the case of FAU, the split in two bands of NH2 asymmetric stretching was observed due to the vicinity of molecule to zeolite wall. Perturbations of ring dipole moments indicated an interaction of aromatic rings with the zeolite frameworks. Cell parameter variations and a remarkable deformation of channel dimensions confirmed the incorporation of sulfamethoxazole into zeolites.

Abstract
Cell parameter variations and a remarkable deformation of channel dimensions confirmed the incorporation of sulfamethoxazole into zeolites.I documenti in SFERA sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
