Sickle cell anaemia (SCA) is one of the commonest hemoglobinopathies in Africa, Middle East and India. Recently its incidence has increased dramatically also in Europe due to the high migration rate from endemic areas. In the provicne of Ferrara, from Jan 2009 to Jan 2010 the number of foreign residents increased by 14,6% most of them coming from countries where the frequencyof the sickle gene is high.
