This work proposes a novel approach which extends cyclostationary analysis to signals recorded under speedvarying conditions. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is discussed on the basis of both simulated and real data. First, a simulated vibration signal including the effects of local faults in both involute gears and bearings is introduced to investigate the potential effectiveness of the proposed approach in analyzing speedvarying signals. Next, actual vibration signals acquired from a faulty gearbox during a run-up are analyzed with both the proposed and standard cyclostationary approaches so as to demonstrates the effectiveness of the former as compared to the latter for local fault diagnostics.
