Two major physiological systems are crucial for adaptation of the organism to environmental challenges: the circadian rhythm system and the stress response system. Consistent evidence indicates that the occurrence of acute cardiovascular events shows a peak in the first hours after waking and commencing activity. Stress is capable of exerting major effects upon the circulatory system, and several variables such as vascular tone, arterial blood pressure, blood coagulation, and fibrinolysis exhibit prominent morning circadian rhythms, which may contribute to these stress effects. © 2007 Copyright © 2007 Elsevier Inc. Abstract
